Docs Warn Teens About Injuries from Excessive Texting

by KYW medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

Physicians at Baylor University in Texas are concerned about teens texting.

We know that teens love to text. In fact, the average teen sends 2,000 text messages every month, and doctors are now saying it could be causing injuries.

The most common are back and neck strain injuries. They're the aches as a result of just bending over and texting consistently.

The next problem is the thumbs. Orthopedic surgeons are concerned that if teens text at extreme levels it could cause problems down the road in the thumb joints because they are just not meant to be used in that fashion.

Other issues of course are perhaps even more frightening. Teens who are texting when they are driving or just not watching where they are going while they are texting. All of these things can lead to immediate injuries.
