Casey Widens Lead Over Santorum in Latest Poll

by KYW's Tony Romeo

Robert Casey Jr. has jumped out to an eye-popping lead over incumbent Rick Santorum in the latest poll on the race for US Senate in Pennsylvania.

The Quinnipiac University poll has Casey, the Democratic state treasurer, leading Santorum by 52 percent to 34 percent.

That 18-point lead is even wider than Casey’s 13-point lead in the school’s previous poll, May 11th.

While it seems like a big jump, Clay Richards –- assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute -– says it’s really just more of the same doldrums for Santorum:

“In the seven polls we have done in the past year, Santorum has gotten between 34 and 39 percent of the vote. And that is just an overall bad number.”

Richards says the poll suggests that Santorum’s biggest obstacle continues to be himself. The poll shows 44 percent of Casey voters say they are primarily voting against Santorum.

The incumbent Republican, meanwhile, plans to begin airing TV commercials later this week -- something Richards says he’s not seen so early in 40 years of watching US Senate campaigns.
