We’re all familiar with many breeds of man’s best friend. But here are a few rare breeds with which you may not be all that familiar.
The loyal and playful Teddy Roosevelt Terrier bred in the United States is a short-legged relative of the Rat Terrier, originally bred for hunting and was named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt.
The Chinese Crested is completely hairless except for a small mane or crest of hair on the head, paws and tail. These little affectionate dogs need protection from the sun. There is a close relative identical to the Chinese Crested but with a long silky coat called the Powder Puff.
The Canaan Dog originated in Israel and has lived in the Middle East for centuries. These intelligent and devoted dogs related to the Basenji, worked with the Red Cross to locate the sick and wounded, and were frequently trained as guide dogs for the blind.
The Shikoku Inu, also called a Kochi ken, was originally bred for hunting in Japan and stands in between the size of a large Akita and a small Shibu Inu. These intelligent, easily trainable dogs have a look similar to the American Husky.
The elegantly distinguished Cane Corso with a loving and stable temperament is a muscular medium to large-sized dog, originally bred in Italy, for hunting, guarding, and protection.
