Pa. Senate Passes Public Breast-Feeding Bill

by KYW's Tony Romeo

The Pennsylvania Senate has passed and sent to the House legislation that would guarantee a woman’s right to breast feed her baby in public.

The Senate’s approval of the bill to ensure a woman’s right to breast feed comes after a much-publicized incident at a Reading mall in which a woman was asked not nurse her baby in public. But the sponsor of the bill, Senate Democrat Connie Williams of Delaware and Montgomery counties, says she was advocating for this legislation long before that. And she has two other bills still awaiting approval, one of which would aid working mothers:

“The other issue is that we now have to go forward and make sure that women who have been breast feeding their children and go back to work, we want to make sure that they’re not punished at their place of work when they take a break to pump milk to bring home to their baby.”

Williams has a third bill that would provide tax breaks for companies that aid women who pump milk. For now, the bill that would protect public breast feeding moves to the House for consideration.
