Democratic mayoral nominee Michael Nutter says he wants to make sure movies set in Philadelphia actually get filmed here, and he won’t wait until he’s sworn in to do something about it.
New York City now gives financial incentives to convince motion picture producers to film there. As a result, a new movie called “It Is What It Is,” will be filmed mainly in the Big Apple, even though it is set in Philadelphia. Michael Nutter says that is ludicrous:
“Look, I’m glad that there’s a film set in Philadelphia, but it is a little crazy that a film about Philadelphia is being made in New York.”
Nutter says he introduced a plan two years ago in City Council that would do much of what New York is doing for filmmakers. The bill went nowhere, but now he plans to ask his colleagues on Council to act on it, this year:
“Maybe we shouldn’t wait, until after the election, or the inauguration.”
