Route 309 Construction Should Be Done By Next Year
|
by KYW's Brad Segall
There’s good news for drivers who use the Route 309 Expressway in Montgomery County, Pa. A six-year project to reconstruct and improve the 10-mile highway is winding down.
By this time next year, Penndot officials say construction should be wrapped up. Crews continue working on the northern end of the highway between Highland Avenue in Upper Dublin and Route 63 in Lower Gwynedd.
Penndot District 6 Administrator Les Toaso says the state is spending nearly $375 million to improve an expressway that dates back more than half a century:
“It will relieve congestion in the area. It will get people quicker from one point to another. It will be a safer road for people to travel on.”
While the construction work is scheduled to finish next summer, crews will still be working on the road until 2013, installing equipment for an Intelligent Transportation System. That will include closed circuit cameras, digital message signs, and other advanced technology designed to keep traffic moving.
