A Georgia man has pleaded guilty in connection with a nationwide identity theft operation that was uncovered by authorities in Montgomery County, Pa.
Prosecutors say Carlos Roberts (above) worked the reservation desk at the Fountain Beach Resort in Daytona Beach, Fla. He had access to customers’ personal information including credit card numbers, and police say he used the information from an estimated 128 people to buy airline tickets and hotel rooms from Delta and Priceline.
Montgomery County prosecutor Tony Gil says the 21-year-old Atlanta man now faces a maximum of 14 years behind bars:
"He bought airline tickets to Washington, DC, to New York City, to Philadelphia, to Houston, Texas. He stayed in those cities. Really what the defendant was doing here was seeing America on somebody else’s dime.”
Gil credits West Norriton, Pa. police for cracking this case wide open. They got a call from a resident who said her information was compromised. Their investigation led to Roberts and scores of other victims. Gil thinks the total amount of stolen goods and services will top $20,000.
