A new eye-catching public art project has been installed in University City.
Philadelphia's latest public art project, "Wave Forms," was designed by internationally acclaimed artist Dennis Oppenheim and has been dedicated in the plaza and courtyard of the new Domus Apartments, at 34th and Chestnut Streets.
The six bell forms weigh a total of 6½ tons. They're made of aluminum and mesh, and are supposed to fully integrate with the surrounding environment as they eventually become covered with plants and flowers.
Dennis Oppenheim:
"We want more of a sort of 'conversation' between the sculpture and the landscape, vegetation. So the vines will grow over part of the bells."
Anne Papageorge, vice president of facilities at the University of Pennsylvania, agrees that it's a desirable project:
"Scale is important; I would say the choice of materials, and creating public open space."
