Phila. Man Held in Shooting of NFL Player Curtis Brinkley

by KYW's Brad Segall

A 23-year-old Philadelphia man is behind bars in Montgomery County, Pa., accused of pumping several bullets into an NFL rookie running back last month in Cheltenham.

Prosecutors say the shooting was fueled by jealousy.

Now, Anthony Peterson (above) is being held without bail, facing attempted murder and related charges for allegedly firing several shots at Curtis Brinkley while he sat in his car waiting to pick up his sister from work in Elkins Park last month (see related stories).

Police say Peterson and Brinkley’s sister have a baby together, and they were arguing prior to the shooting about her seeing another man.

Montco district attorney Risa Ferman says this is a case of mistaken identity:

"He was shot by a man who was jealous and in a rage over his girlfriend potentially seeing someone else and he thought he was killing that person.”

Police say Peterson was in the bushes waiting for his girlfriend to be picked up. They say he walked up to the car and fired several shots from a .357 magnum handgun.

Brinkley, a former standout at West Catholic High School and Syracuse University, continues to recover. He was signed as a free agent by San Diego.
