Careers in Technology

by KYW's Dr. Marciene Mattleman

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates 54.7 million job openings over the 2004-2014 period. Of those openings, 18.9 million are expected to be created through growth, while the lion’s share—35.8 million—will be openings created by exiting workers, including, most notably, retiring baby boomers.

Employment opportunities in the high-tech field of computers will continue to grow throughout the decade. Demand for programmers, systems analysts and software developers will be particularly strong.

If you're knowledgeable in the IT field but have many other interests when it comes to employment, you can combine your skills and desires with an IT job. Working in social sciences, medicine, fashion and food all require data collection, analysis and math skills.

Both women and men are job seekers in these fields; however look at this trend. Among the 100 most powerful women listed in Forbes magazine, are the following: Carol Bartz, chief of Yahoo; Ann Livermore, executive vice president of Hewlett Packard; Virginia Rometty, chief executive of IBM; and Cheryl Sandberg, CEO of Facebook.

Women, carpe diem, seize the day.
