The NAACP is filing a complaint against the Philadelphia Police Department regarding an incident that occurred last week in the city's Mantua section.
Captain Christine Coulter was one of several high ranking officials who showed up at a public meeting to discuss what neighbors describe as a case of police brutality:
"There was an incident that occurred out here where officers were making an arrest. They were assaulted during the course of that arrest and people are now coming forward and giving a conflicting version of what they believe happened and what we're here to do is to get to the bottom of it."
Witness Beverly Briggs:
"I looked over there and saw the cops, all these white cops beating these girls! And beating my daughter's girlfriends and her brother!"
Jerry Mondesire with the NAACP describes the incident as a vehicle search that got out of hand. He says at least 6 people have come forward claiming to have been assaulted by police:
"It harkens of course back to the good old days when the police ran wild in this city. But because there's so much conversation now about 'stop and frisk', we don't want to let this summer begin with a mini-act of police abuse and then it spreads because there's a sense of tolerance that we're going to allow this to happen."
Captain Coulter says an investigation is now underway.
