The Philadelphia Orchestra brings the Chicago Symphony's acclaimed "Beyond the Score" program to the Kimmel Center on three dates during the upcoming season.
Jeremy Rothman (right), vice president of artistic planning, says the concert series gives music lovers the inside story on each composer's life:
"Over the course of the year, maestro Charles Dutoit is going to lead three different programs, and each one is going to focus on a single piece of music. The first one is Bartók’s 'The Miraculous Mandarin' (October 6th), then Stravinsky’s 'The Rite of Spring' (April 8th), and Mussorgsky’s 'Pictures at an Exhibition' (June 3rd)."
And Rothman says a multimedia presentation precedes each performance of the entire score:
"The host, Gerard McBurney, is going to talk about these pieces along with a video screen. They're going to show photographs (and) video montages to give you all kinds of visual and historical footage, to give a real context around the piece. There will be actors; there will be musical demonstrations."
