Sophomores at Drexel University are moving into the school's new "green" dormitory in West Philadelphia this week.
Millennium Hall (right) is 17 stories high, has a façade primarily made of glass, and houses 482 sophomores.
Dean of students Dr. David Ruth says there are many environmentally sustainable features in this new building:
"There is a 3,000-square-foot 'green' roof that manages the storm water and reduces the heat effect on the roof. The building is an envelope system with a rain screen panel to provide solar shading. Restricted flow toilets and shower heads have been installed to reduce the use of water. And lots of windows."
The residence hall has an urban industrial feel, with open spaces and exposed concrete walls and ceilings. The dormitory cost $42 million to build.
