SEPTA is investigating a head-on train crash that occurred Saturday afternoon in Abington.
One of the R2 trains was going north, the other going south when they smacked into each other, and we are learning that at least one of these trains may have had some warning it was on a collision course and may have activated the emergency brake. The other was crawling at a super-slow pace having just left a station, according to SEPTA spokesman Richard Maloney.
"We believe that the impact speed was relatively low, and we're very thankful for that because if it had been much faster, this would have been catastrophic."
About thirty people were hurt. Most of the injuries were minor, a lot of bumps and bruises from being tossed around the car. Neighbors on Grovenia Street helped the injured passengers until ambulances came. SEPTA and local and federal agencies will be investigating why these two trains ended up on the exact same track, when normally they would take turns.
