Hot news! When USA Today suggested that Jenny Sawyer, 24, might change education, I thought she was important to check out.
On September 14th, www.60secondrecap.com, hit the web with the first of 100, free one-minute videos that she hopes will help students understand and enjoy the most frequently assigned classic works of literature. The article calls her “frank, funny and attractive,” and I agree.
Remember Lord of the Flies? Jenny gives you an “album” of ten one-minute topics--the plot, cast, symbols, motifs, themes, and main ideas. She suggests that the book isn’t a happy one and perhaps kids might not want to read it unless they’re assigned.
Soon Hamlet, Great Expectations and To Kill a Mockingbird will come to life as 97 more “albums” will be produced that hopefully get kids reading, each with 10 topics, making this ambitious project 1,000 videos in all.
Think about Cliff Notes for 21st century students and you’ll get the appeal. At whatever your age, watch for a video of a book you’ve heard about on www.60secondrecap.com, then read it.
