Pennsylvania's tourism bureau used the Fourth of July holiday as an occasion to announce the winner of its official bumper sticker slogan: I break for Shoofly Pie.
That's B-R-E-A-K, a nice play on words, says Mickey Rowley, Pennsylvania's deputy secretary of tourism.
He says about 6,000 people logged on to the state's visitPA.com web site to cast votes from among about three dozen possible choices:
" 'Ready, Set, Go' was popular. 'I Go Happy' was popular. 'Honk if you like Road Trips.' So many of them did pretty well. But 'The State of Independence' [the state's official tourism slogan] was the lead until this past weekend."
Rowley says the winner rose to the top just as balloting closed on July 1st. He suspects that Lancaster County -- home of the Pennsylvania Dutch dessert -- may have run a last-minute campaign to push the "I Break for Shoofly Pie" slogan to the top.
The bumper stickers -- featuring a blue background, gold keystone, and white writing -- will be available free at Pennsylvania's 15 welcome centers across the state or through the tourism bureau.
