Talk to Your Doctor About Childhood Vaccines

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

There are many obstacles to successful vaccination of children.  One of the biggest ones is whether or not mothers of children buy into the concept. And that's a big issue.

If your children are going to get vaccinated, you have to understand what the purpose of the vaccines is.  I think a lot of this has to do with physicians explaining the reasons for vaccinations.

It's very important that you can talk to your doctor and talk about the pros and cons of the wide variety of vaccinations that your child will receive. There are many serious medical diseases that have been all but eradicated due to vaccinations and it is easy to forget why it is important to get them.

This year there is the added talk surrounding H1N1 and the vaccine to reduce the chances of getting a severe case of this form of the flu. More than ever it is a good time to communicate with your pediatrician or family physician.
