A comeback of sorts for efforts to unionize dealers at casinos in Atlantic City as dealers at Bally’s voted overwhelmingly to be represented by the United Auto Workers.
It wasn't even close, according to regional UAW director Joe Ashton:
“We won the vote by over 70 percent. It was an astonishing victory. The final count was 628 for the UAW and 245 for the casino.”
Saturday's vote is viewed by many in Atlantic City as a watershed event of sorts. The UAW has been working to unionize dealers for months.
In March, Caesar's and Trump Plaza approved moves to bring in the union. But in recent weeks dealers at Trump Marina and the Hilton voted no; the Trump Marina action failing by just eight votes.
Ashton says he expects dealers at the other six casinos in Atlantic City to consider going union with official word to come in the next couple weeks.
