A New, Larger Home for 'Fair Food Farmstand'

by KYW's Steve Tawa

The "Fair Food Farmstand" in the Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia at 12th and Arch Streets has moved into a larger, more visible space providing a new crop of products for the region's growing local food movement.

Fair Food executive director Ann Karlen says they are delighted to be a link between rural farmers and consumers, to promote a healthy, sustainable food system for the region:

"Everything we sell is from a local family farmer producer. We source our products from about a 150-mile radius around Philadelphia."

They've reached out to more than 90 local farms to bring in vegetables, fruits, meats, poultry, eggs and cheese. Among them, Sue Miller:

"When you spend your dollars wisely, supporting local farms, it makes a huge difference."

She owns a dairy farm in a small hamlet near Chester Springs:

"We milk 80 Holstein cows, right there in Birchrunville, Pa. (Chester County). We felt that the quality of our milk really determined that it wanted to be cheese."

Right now, they're doing the non-cheddar thing, producing a blue and a Gruyère, among others, following old-world traditions.
