Students and parents from a North Philadelphia elementary school took part on Wednesday morning in the annual observance of "International Walk to School Day."
Several students from the Sheppard Elementary School, at Howard and Cambria Streets (above), arrived at the schoolyard with a parent to demonstrate the importance of safety on the walk to school.
Jessica Acevedo brought her five-year-old son, Hector:
"I teach him how to cross the streets, don't talk to strangers -- that's definitely number one. And, if anybody tries to pull up beside you, just scream and run."
Gina Duchossois is trauma prevention coordinator for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She says doctors see too many children at the hospital who are victims of pedestrian accidents -- some of them fatal:
"We want to make sure that not only you, all the children, but your parents are aware of these hazards that can happen out there when you're outside playing or walking to and from school."
Duchossois encourages parents to teach youngsters to cross the street at crosswalks and not run out from between parked cars.
