Planting bulbs that bloom early is like planting hope. When crocuses shoot up in the late winter and their purple flowers bloom on sunny cold days, you have proof that spring will come. Sometimes you see a field of little scilla bulbs blooming on someone’s lawn - it’s pretty and the leaves die back before the grass needs mowing. Another great little bulb is chionodoxa – known as ‘glory of the snow’ – chionodoxa have five or more star-shaped bright blue flowers to a stem - so you get a big bang from each little bulb.
These earliest bulbs to bloom are also the easiest to plant since they only need to be a couple of inches under the soil. Make a quick trench with a trowel, poke holes with a screwdriver, or stick them into soft soil with your finger. Since they’re so easy to get into the ground, plant plenty – when you see those shoots of hope in late winter, you won’t be sorry.
