A well-known singer/songwriter, who grew up in South Philadelphia and played a significant role in the motion picture The Godfather in the 1970s, has died. Al Martino began his early years in many local clubs in South Philadelphia, South Jersey, The Jersey Shore, and Poconos resorts.
Martino died at his Springfield Township, Pa. home in Delaware County on Tuesday, he was 82. He gained popularity in the 50's and 60's with many chart topping tunes, including "Spanish Eyes", "Mary in the Morning" and "Here in My Heart." He also played Johnny Fontain in the first Godfather movie.
Martino grew up near 15th and Tasker Streets, and he first became a bricklayer as a youth, then joined the navy, and in the 50's turned to a singing career for his livelihood.
