Delco Fire Co. Treasurer Charged in $100k Embezzlement

by KYW's Brad Segall

The former treasurer of a suburban volunteer fire company is under arrest, accused of stealing more than $100,000 over a two-year period.

Prosecutors allege 37-year-old Lisa Butler (above) wrote nearly three dozen checks to herself between November 2006 and December of last year while she was overseeing the money at the Briarcliffe Fire Company in Darby Township.

Delaware County district attorney Mike Green says the Glenolden woman used the money for personal expenses.

Green says $100,000 is a lot of money for any organization to lose:

“That’s especially true when we’re talking about a volunteer fire company serving a community that requires its service in order to protect the men, women, and children that reside within that community.”

Green says the fire company noticed there was money missing when Butler was suspended from the company last December for an unrelated incident. Green says non-profits need to better protect themselves by having yearly accounting audits.
