What do Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, Ohio’s Oberlin College and California’s Pomona College have in common? All are listed in The Hidden Ivies, a new book subtitled, 50 Top Colleges from Amherst to Williams that Rival the Ivy League.
More than just data -- location, curriculum, numbers graduating in four years-- when you read about these schools you’ll learn that the majority of private institutions provide larger financial aid than do the public.
The Hidden Ivies makes it clear that outstanding performance in a high-level curriculum is the greatest single factor in admission to a selective college and tells parents not to talk about college admission at the dinner table.
Authors Howard Greene and Mathew Greene urge parents to be open about their financial situation because it bears on decision making; but forecast the bad news that the cost of a college education will continue to rise.
While I’ve never subscribed to rating colleges, this volume doesn’t compare schools, but describes them—each with the usual statistics, (all have more women), but with descriptions that really create the ambience of a campus.
