Therapy Dogs

by KYW's Nan Talleno

Therapy dogs are amazing dogs, providing comfort, affection and companionship to many people in hospitals, nursing homes, long-term care facilities, those in recovery from stress or trauma, children or adults with learning disabilities, and those suffering from depression, abuse, loneliness, etc.

Therapy dogs are not considered service or assistance dogs, dogs who directly assist humans in need in numerous daily activities, however, therapy dogs do provide a wonderful service in their own right.  These dogs provide the emotional therapy needed to bring about a positive change in the lives of many suffering emotionally and physically. Their warm, calming presence and unconditional love and affection can inspire, motivate and support those in need of change and progression, as well as bring a sense of joy, confidence and a special emotional bond.

Studies have proven that the presence of therapy dogs can reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure and help patients become more active and alert. It’s been proven to aid many children with various learning disabilities and to overcome their fears by reading alongside a therapy dog.

Therapy dogs are not restricted to breed, size or age.  Temperament plays a key role. The ideal therapy dog is calm, friendly, tolerant and not highly reactive.
