The Philadelphia Phillies now know who they will play in the World Series starting on Wednesday. The New York Yankees are back in baseball's big event after beating the LA Angels on Sunday night, 5-2.
KYW's Mike DeNardo reports Phillies fans are waiting until Wednesday night, when the Phils will begin the defense of last year's World Series championship against the storied franchise that has 26 titles - the New York Yankees. Fans we talked with said this was the matchup they wanted all along:
"I'd like to see the Phils facing the Yankees because I used to live in New York and I'd like to see them beat New York."
(Denardo): "I guess if you want to be the best, you've got to beat the best, right?"
"You got that right!"
Cliff Lee will be on the mound for the Phils in Game One, versus C.C. Sabathia for New York. Pedro Martinez and Cole Hamels are the candidates to pitch game two.
The Phils won two of the three games they played at Yankee Stadium during the regular season this year.
KYW's Tony Romeo reports are the 2009 Phillies finally starting to undo some of the damage done to our civic pride by years of futility on the part of our major league sports teams?
In 1997, a KYW Regional Affairs Council series entitled “Are We Our Own Worst Enemy?” explored the reasons why Philadelphians sometimes arena’t entirely upbeat about their region.
Several segments were devoted to the role played by our major league sports franchises.
One of the participants in that series was Dr. Michael Sachs, a sports psychologist at Temple University. So the question is now can the gritty, never-say-die Phillies erase our community’s feelings of low self-esteem about sports if they repeat as World Series champs?
“Ahhh, I don’t think I’d go so far as to say ‘erasing,’ but I think certainly they can put quite a few holes or some big dents into the, you know, inferiority complex that’s there.”
Sachs says a Lombardi trophy, NBA title, or Stanley Cup would help, too, but says the Phillies have given us a start.
