The Phillies-Yankees World Series Match-up is becoming quite a boon for those who market Philadelphia to tourists.
The Phillies return to the World Series for a second consecutive year, and that's music to the ears of Cara Schneider of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation. Some of her staffers will be on the streets of Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon promoting Philadelphia:
"And we will be giving away some restaurant certificates and we'll be showing 'with Love Philadelphia' proudly. We always want to build Philly's image, but we don't always have to do it through the travel section. We can do it through the sports pages and the food pages and that is what we are doing."
And Evan Stein, born and raised in Newtown Square, Pa. owns Manhattan cheese steak shop Shorty's. He will offer free cheese steaks starting at 4pm for the first couple of hundred customers who stop by. Schneider says all the ingredients are from Philly:
"Shorty's gets their bread from LeBus and they get their meat from a South Street company. He has it imported up to New York."
Why did Stein decide to open "Shorty's" a Manhattan restaurant serving Philly Cheese steaks?
"About 4 years ago, I was walking around the West Village and I saw a sign in a window in this little cheese steak shop that said "Best Damn Cheesesteak...period." So I went in and tried it and was disgusted by it. I had this idea to open up a real cheese steak shop in the middle of Manhattan."
Stein says he's not going to let geography get in the way of rooting for his team:
"I'm surrounded and I'm smack dab in the middle of the Hell's Kitchen block. I have New York stores all around me. I have fans walking by Shorty's screaming not so nice things about the Phillies and the Eagles all day so I'm used to it!"
Stein says even though New Yorkers may not like Philly teams, they seem to migrate there on Sundays.
