Calling the crime particularly vicious and cold-hearted, a judge has sentenced 3 teenagers to at least 12-and-a-half years in prison for the beating death of 36-year-old Sean Conroy (photo), a Starbucks manager attacked as he walked to work on a subway concourse near 13th and Market Streets last year.
The prosecutor had sought a 20 to 40 year sentence. Stephen and Sharon Conroy, who told the court they are haunted by their son's cries for mercy, for help, as he was beaten and lay dying from an asthma attack on the subway concourse, wanted a longer sentence.
(Stephen Conroy) “These three are going to get out before they are even Sean's age.”
(Sharon Conroy) “I am disappointed. I don't think anyone left there happy today. As a parent, we were hoping for the maximum.”
The evidence showed Sean Conroy was attacked at random, on a dare, and the defendants laughed about it. But in court they all said they were sorry, and repeatedly expressed remorse. But the judge and the victim's parents said they didn't buy it.
