Balloon-Twisting Art Exhibit Opens in Fishtown on Saturday

by KYW's Karin Phillips

A new art exhibit in Fishtown, which opens to the public on Saturday, takes the art of balloon twisting to a whole new level.

The Skybook studio building at 2424 East York Street in Fishtown used to be a castor factory, but for the next month, giant biomorphic creatures made up of balloons will hang from the ceilings of the huge exhibit space.

Jason Hackenwerth is the creator of The Titan and the Fireflies:

"This is a huge and amazing space. It's a real honor to be able to have the opportunity to make massive sculptures to fill this space up and that's what we're doing."

Curator Eileen Tognini says Jason's work expands the definition of what is art.

"There's a whole circle of folks that are called balloon twisters and they do all sorts of amazing things. I prefer to call Jason a sculpture who's medium in balloons."

The Titan and the Fireflies will be at the Skybox through November 28th.
