New Jersey’s two top candidates for governor are trading barbs on a number of issues in the waning days of the campaign. One near the top of the list -- education funding.
It’s a question of priorities, really. Where should the money be spent? Democrat incumbent Jon Corzine, on a campaign stop in Pennsauken on Thursday, defended his push to improve pre-kindergarten funding statewide:
"I believe we can’t afford not to be investing in early childhood education. My only regret is that, given the recession, we haven’t been able to take forward our plans to expand even further."
Republican Chris Christie, speaking at a campaign stop in Salem County, denied contentions that he’d cut such funding:
"I would continue the pre-K programs that we have in place right now. But I oppose the governor’s expansion of pre-K programs, because we simply don’t have the money."
Christie would rather see full funding for K-12 education first.
