Limited Staffing Forced to Cover for Sick Employees

by KYW's medical editor Dr. Brian McDonough

It is one of the problems with H1N1 that no one is talking about but it is a big problem nonetheless: covering for other workers who are sick.

Here we are smack in the middle of this tremendous economic downturn. Most employees in just about every company are overworked covering for employee shortages and now there are more people who are unable to work.

A couple of quick points: first, if you think you are sick with h1n1 don't go to work and don’t feel guilty.  It is more important you do not spread the virus to other employees. On the other hand, if you are working to cover for a sick employee try to be patient. I know it can be frustrating but pace yourself. You can only do what you can and work at 100%.  There will be some tasks that won't get done. Putting extra stress on yourself is not good for your health.

This is a unique situation that requires understanding at al levels.
