When voters head to the polls in Lower Merion, Pa. on Tuesday, they will elect two constables for the township. Montgomery County prosecutors say one of the candidates running shouldn’t even have his name on the ballot.
Steven Sokoloff (file photo above) and his wife Julie are the two Democratic candidates for constable, but prosecutors say he shouldn’t even be on the ballot.
Prosecutor Tony Gil says the 58-year-old Ardmore man promised not to run if the district attorney’s office agreed not to prosecute him for alleged abuses of power:
“Steven Sokoloff promised not to run again. He’s running again. He’s on the ballot. He’s thumbing his nose at the judge. There’s absolutely no question here that Steven Sokoloff is violating his own agreement.”
The judge issued an order preventing Sokoloff from running anywhere in Montgomery County, but Sokoloff’s attorney has doubts about whether it’s enforceable.
Sokoloff was accused of cuffing a sales manager in the showroom of a Norristown car dealership over an unpaid parking ticket that he had nothing to do with (see related story).
