Personal Stories Are the Focus of a Philadelphia Festival

by KYW's Karin Phillips

The "First Person Arts Festival," the only event of its kind in the world dedicated to memoir and documentary arts, kicks off on Tuesday in Philadelphia.

The festival not only concentrates on memory but provides experiences for memory, says Vickie Solot, executive director of First Person Arts:

"The programs honor history as told through personal stories and documentaries, and also courts controversy and raises issues that we hope that people will be thinking about and talking about.  And then there are some that are just plain fun."

Like the man who has performed karaoke all over the world and will talk about his experience.

The festival last through Sunday and includes a concert by Sara Lee Gunthrie (granddaughter of Woody Guthrie), a workshop by legendary singer-songwriter Bill Withers, authors' talks, and film screenings.
