Locally Sold Beef Among the Hundreds of Thousands of Pounds Recalled
|
by KYW's Ian Bush
Authorities say two deaths and more than two dozen illnesses may be linked to fresh ground beef that could be contaminated with E.coli bacteria.
More than half a million pounds has been recalled, and some of it was sold in stores in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. One person was reported ill in New Jersey and two people in Pennsylvania.

If there's ground beef in your freezer, check the label:
"Look for an establishment number of EST 492. It's inside the USDA mark of inspection. It can also be located somewhere close to the nutrition facts, and packaged products would have sell-by dates ranging mostly from 9/19 to 9/28."

Agnes Schafer, with Fairbank Farms, says that's for meat purchased locally from Acme, BJs, Giant, and Trader Joe's -- though their affected sell-by dates also include October 6th and 7th.
If you bring the recalled meat back to stores, you'll get a full refund.
E.coli symptoms usually show up four to eight days after eating contaminated food. Beef should always be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees to kill the bacteria.
Fairbank Farms, which is based in New York, has provided a toll-free number for consumers to call with questions. It's open from 8am-8pm at 877-546-0122.
