Philadelphia Hospitals Implement Transit Strike Contingency Plans

by KYW's John McDevitt

Hospitals in Philadelphia have been monitoring the Septa strike closely. Many had already created a contingency plan for a mass transit shutdown and are making modifications as needed.

At Pennsylvania Hospital in center city, shuttle buses are transporting employees during late-night and early-morning hours to and from 8th and Market and 11th and Market Streets, for those who want to use Regional Rails or Patco.

Darryl Beard is the director of  security and parking for the hospital, and is now overseeing the transportation situation. He says parking is being added for workers, too:

"We added space for them in remote lots and on the lots closest to the hospital, to allow them to come up and park as long as they demonstrate that they are an employee of the hospital by showing their ID.  It's a flat rate of $5 for our staff."

He says the hospital has had a contingency plan in place for about a week.

Albert Einstein Medical Center, in the Olney section of the city, was also shuttling employees from campus to campus and to the Fern Rock Transportation Center. Car pools are being coordinated, too.
