In a surprise development, the defendant charged with the 2007 murder of Philadelphia police officer Chuck Cassidy has withdrawn motions challenging the admissibility of statements he made about the murder.
The evidence against John Lewis includes his alleged confession to police, statements to family, and a public admission to reporters after he was arrested in Florida (see related stories).
But the defense says that Lewis himself decided not to challenge the admissibility of any of that evidence, or any physical or identification evidence.
So, jury selection will begin Wednesday as previously scheduled, with opening statements and testimony expected next week.
There is a gag order in the case, so the attorneys could not comment on the new development beyond what was said in court.
Lewis is accused of killing Philadelphia police officer Chuck Cassidy and then stealing his gun when the officer walked in on a doughnut store robbery on North Broad Street in West Oak Lane (see related stories).
