This week, the transit strike here at home (see related story) can be a jarring reminder that a getaway trip can also have transportation pitfalls.

It’s a good idea, when traveling, to check out the transportation labor climate at your destination. But who bothers?
Then, when you wind up in Paris, for instance, in the middle of a nationwide transit shutdown, you really have to start getting creative.
There are solutions. In Paris and Amsterdam, a traveler can always use the tour boats on the Seine (above) and the canals. In both cities they connect the major attractions, and you can get off and on at key locations.
In Barcelona, you can rent a bike –- even a Segway (you know, those two-wheel motorized curiosities).
In Bermuda, moped rental shops can be found everywhere in Hamilton and St. George, and at major hotels.
Closer to home, getting to downtown Boston from Logan Airport is as simple as hopping on a water taxi.
In midtown Manhattan, pedicabs are common. With short north-south blocks, it’s also very walkable.
And of course, just about everywhere, there’s always a taxi ride. But during a transit strike, it becomes more of a very expensive crawl -- if you can get a cab at all.
