Aversion to the Litter Box

by KYW's Nan Talleno

Many times you may find that your cat has a strange new found aversion to the litter box. There may be several reasons for this new unwanted behavior.

First, make sure that the litter box is always clean and maintained and that the litter is changed often. If you’ve recently changed the type that you usually use, you may find that you now need to change back since your cat prefers the original. It could be due to scent or texture.

Other reasons for litter box aversion include the location of the box.  Make sure it is located in a secure and somewhat private area. Also your cat may or may not like a covered box.  Be aware of the how much litter is in the box too, since some cats prefer more depth. Sometimes it could be a combination of any of these factors as well.

Always check with your veterinarian first. Since aversion to the litter box may also be an indication of an illness such as urinary tract infection.

Never punish your cat for this behavior, simply step back to try to figure out what the reason might be and then readjust to meet your cat’s needs.
