Dreams of Phils Repeat Crushed by 'Godzilla'

KYW Newsradio Team Coverage

The Phillies lost to the Yankees 7-3 in Game Six of the World Series on Wednesday night, ending the Phillies bid at a repeat. It was title number 27 for the Yankees.

Starting pitcher Pedro Martinez got roughed up early and the Phillies bullpen failed to keep the game close. Yankees' starter Andy Pettite flirted with trouble a few times but was able to get a couple key double plays to avoid any offensive outbursts by the Phils. And the Yankees relief pitchers shut down the Phils offense over the final three innings.

KYW's Mike DeNardo reports from Yankee Stadium. With a record-tying six runs batted in, the Yankee they call "Godzilla" stepped on and crushed any hopes the Phils had of sending this World Series to a seventh game.

This time there was no miracle comeback, and Phillies fans had to settle for a National League title to follow up last year's world championship:

"The whole season was successful. But it was a little disappointing tonight, they had a lot of people on base and they didn't really come through with the clutch hits that they had previously throughout the season and into the playoffs."

But fans say the Phillies 2009 postseason has been a heck of a ride:

"We were World Champions last year, we came up short this year. But we were here."

And fans believe the Phils have a great chance to be back in 2010.

KYW's Jim Melwert reports that Phillies fans headed out to their good-luck bars, but the luck was nowhere to be found at a Center City sports bar.

Not the script Phillies fans had written as they watched their Fightin's dig an early hole and go on to lose to the Yankees.

Once it was official, fans watched the TVs in silence as the Yankees celebrated:

"Just say I'm very disappointed, but the Phillies had a great season, and that's all I can say, I guess."

Even though things looked bleak all night, the faithful kept cheering, hoping to send some love up to their boys in Bronx:

"Kept faith the entire season, And kept faith until the last at bat right there, but it just wasn't meant to be, I guess."

And fans say, the key players on this team will be back next season, with a good shot at a fourth straight post-season appearance.
