Gangs of a different sort are all over North Philadelphia today. Groups of ex-offenders and people in recovery are involved in a neighborhood cleanup.
Over 100 members of One Day at a Time and Everything Must Change, recovery programs for ex-offenders and addicts, gathered at the Winchester Recreation Center at 15th and York and then fanned out to several neighborhoods to clean up around North Philadelphia. Mel Wells is president of One Day at a Time.
“What we do is try to give back to our community, because we took so much away from our community. Our mothers may have been up at night worrying about us; our kids may have been looking for us - their parents - but it's time we come together and give back to our community.”
The cleanup is in advance of a 5K walk throughout the neighborhood Saturday morning that will benefit urban kids who want to go to camp next summer.
