A South Jersey congressman is repeating his call for answers regarding plans to close a regional US Postal Service distribution facility early next year, eliminating hundreds jobs. And, if he doesn’t get them soon, the fate of the facility could wind up in court.
Congressman Rob Andrews has heard nothing on the planned shutdown of the Philadelphia Logistics and Distribution Center just outside Swedesboro in February. And therein lies the problem.:
“They’re claiming that the justification for turning upside down the lives of nearly 600 people is it will save money, but they can’t prove it. The law requires them to prove it and we’re going to make them follow the law.”
So he’s fired off a letter to postmaster general John Potter demanding answers. If he doesn’t get them - and soon - look for a federal lawsuit to be filed in short order.
While not addressing Andrews’s letter directly, the Postal Service, in an e-mail, insists it’s following a federal mandate to economize and workers will be given the chance to transfer to other facilities with openings, if they’re qualified.
