Former VP Al Gore Addresses Phila. World Affairs Council

by KYW’s Steve Tawa

The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia held a day-long conference on Friday on 'Critical Security Issues in the 21st Century.' Former Vice President Al Gore was the keynote speaker.

Al gore says there's a nexus between economic, energy, and national security, all of which are linked to climate security:

“That common thread is our absurd and ridiculous over dependence on carbon-based fuels.”

Mr. Gore has a book just out, called 'Our Choice, a Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis.' In it, he details how the Middle East, 'the center of gravity for the oil market,' takes production rates up and down, depending on market conditions:

“This roller coaster is headed for a crash. And we're in the front car.”

He says oil producing concerns are particularly adept at manipulating prices, including the summer of 2008, when oil hit $145 a barrel:

“They did not keep the price high enough, for long enough, to awaken our political will to reclaim control of our destiny.”

He says Americans could chart our own course by turning to renewable sources, including solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and nuclear energies.
