The brave, in-the-line-of-duty actions of a slain Philadelphia police officer continue to make Philadelphia safer. A man arrested by Officer John Pawlowski (photo) in August of last year, six months before the officer's murder, has been sentenced to seven years in prison.
Officer John Pawlowski was flagged down by a SEPTA passenger who reported a man on a bus had a gun, and Federal Prosecutor Joseph Whitehead says officer Pawlowski stopped the bus, confronted the suspect, who was wearing a bulletproof vest and had a gun in his waistband, and there was a struggle:
“And in a fight that seemed like something out of a motion picture, both men tumbled out of the bus, continued to roll around on the pavement with a loose weapon nearby. Parlowski had to shout for assistance. The SEPTA bus driver kicked the weapon while this defendant continued to struggle.”
Twenty-nine- year-old repeat offender Sorrell Groves was subdued and apprehended by Officer Pawlowski and other officers who arrived to help. Officer Pawlowski was murdered six months later responding to another call; another man with a gun.
