Recent developments have state capitol observers on high alert for the possibility of more charges in the probe of the legislature dubbed “bonusgate.”
It’s been 16 months since Pennsylvania attorney general Tom Corbett (above) brought charges against 12 people associated with the House Democratic caucus in a legislative corruption probe. Published reports said last month, letters went out to former speaker John Perzel and others associated with the House Republican caucus, inviting them to testify before a grand jury.
Bruce Antkowiak is a professor at Duquesne Law School:
“The sending out of what is generally referred to as a 'target letter' by a prosecutor who is assisting a grand jury in an investigation generally indicates that much, if not all, of the grand jury’s work in the investigation is done.”
But Antkowiak said he could not draw a conclusion about last week’s resignation of two top House Republican staffers.
