He’s expected to spend millions of his own money on the race for governor, but Philadelphia businessman Tom Knox wants to limit contributions others can make to candidates for state offices.
Tom Knox (above) is proposing a series of Pennsylvania government reforms, including limits on contributions to state political campaigns but no limits on how much a candidate can spend his or her own campaign. Knox, who spent millions of his own money on his campaign for Philadelphia mayor, was asked if he’s concerned that his proposal might skew the process toward wealthy candidates:
“Well, you know, maybe the wealthy actually have an advantage in that they don’t have to take contributions from special interest groups, and that’s good. Usually people who are wealthy, you know, can’t be bought.”
Knox is one of five likely or announced Democrats for governor. Meanwhile, Berks County representative Sam Rohrer is expected to announce later this month that he’ll join the Republican race for governor against attorney general Tom Corbett and congressman Jim Gerlach.
