The former treasurer of a parent-teacher organization in Cheltenham, Pa. is headed to trial in Montgomery County, on charges she stole more than $29,000 from the PTO.
Prosecutors say Geneen Stuart (above) eventually put most of the money back, but they are still moving forward with their case against the 45-year-old woman.
For a year, they say, she was moving money electronically from the organization’s checking account to her own account, and using the cash to pay personal expenses.
Prosecutor Chris Parisi says it was two PTO officers at the Elkins Park School that found the transfers and withdrawals:
“I don’t know that it had an effect in terms of activities or anything like that, but certainly it undermines trust. When you have people in these positions, you expect them to do the right thing.”
He says the return of the money is a good-faith effort on Stuart’s part, and that will be considered as the case moves forward.
Stuart remains free on $10,000 bail.
