Former Phila. Eagle May Run for Office in South Jersey

by KYW's David Madden

Former Philadelphia Eagles' offensive tackle Jon Runyan is pondering a run for Congress in South Jersey.

Runyan had been planning a comeback on the gridiron. Now, in a statement, he says he’s “seriously considering” a Republican run for the seat now held by Cherry Hill freshman Democrat John Adler.

The Third District covers mostly Burlington and Ocean counties, and the seat had been in Republican hands for decades, until now.

Burlington County GOP chairman William Layton would welcome Runyan into the fold, with one caveat:

“I think it’s important for all the county organizations that select a congressional candidate to come together behind one candidate so that we can avoid a costly primary.”

A costly primary like they had last year. There are two other Republicans said to be pondering a run, former Burlington County freeholder Aubrey Fenton and Medford state assemblyman Scott Rudder.
