The tourism industry is holding its own in the city of Philadelphia despite the recession, but regional leaders are urging businesses and residents to help bring more tourists to the city.
At a Thursday morning meeting hosted by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, it was generally agreed that tourism has remained high in Philadelphia despite the recession, but there's more that must be done.
Jack Ferguson is executive vice president of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau:
"It's not only competition in the northeast corridor, but it's competition with all the major destinations in the United States, as well as globally."
Meryl Levitz, president and CEO of the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation, says businesses and residents in our region must be ambassadors for Philadelphia:
"People can tell very quickly whether the residents of a region are believers in their own home or not. And that makes a big difference in whether they are going to come again, or say 'nah.' "
