The Infamous 'Drexel Shaft' is Imploded in West Philadelphia

by KYW’s Al Novack

A familiar site above the old Penn-Coach train station yard near 30th Street is gone. A 425-foot smoke stack was demolished by implosion around 7:45am Sunday morning to make way for a parking lot.

Some streets around Amtrak’s Penn Coach Yard near 30th Street were closed for about 15 minutes because an Amtrak demolition contractor took down a 425 foot smoke stack above an old power station no longer in use.

The stack was safely toppled without incident at 7:45am. The old steam power plant was built in the 1920's.
The plant was closed and taken out of operation in 1964. The site will be cleared and a parking lot will take its place.
