The runners hit the road on Sunday morning for the 16th annual Philadelphia Marathon.
The Boston Marathon has a century of tradition. New York's has the wide streets. But the 16-year-old Philadelphia Marathon has its own flavor. It's a relatively flat course between the Delaware River and Manayunk, past historic and cultural landmarks, says city representative Melanie Johnson.:
"When people come around the curve from Kelly Drive and up back at about 21st and the Parkway for our finish line -- when they get a picture, that picture is them crossing the finish line with the backdrop as the Philadelphia Museum of Art."
Ten thousand runners are registered for the full marathon, and 8000 for the half-marathon. Johnson says next year the 8k run will move to Saturday, to allow for more marathoners.
